Making Mobile User Friendly
If it looks cool…. it feels sophisticated.
Almost regardless of whether it really is or not.
When people choose to use a computer over a cell phone or tablet it is usually for one simple reason: what they are working on or looking for is not user friendly on a mobile device.
This makes the user interface one of the most important parts of going mobile. Whether you are using mobile to connect with your customers or using it to create larger efficiency in your business, the way the user interacts with the app will make or break the investment. If it has a terrible user interface, then employee adoption will take longer and prove to be more frustrating than it needs to be. On the same note, if your app is for consumers and it is not user friendly, they wont even bother with it and the risk of flopping at that point is extreme.
The steps to create a user friendly experience are not all that complicated; here are a few rules:
- Keep it simple, silly – There are a variety of screen sizes, when building assume a really small screen (or a specific one if you wish to standardize a device in your company) so not to leave anybody out
- Avoid Cramming – There is a ton of information that is available on computers, when working to go mobile only bring over the key items or processes
- Don’t make em’ wait – Keep the flashy animations to a minimum, users are usually impatient and just want their information as soon as connection time allows.
- Have cool graphics – again, looking cool helps the app feel more sophisticated, don’t shy away from putting the necessary resources into graphics
